According to a report from gun control advocacy organization Everytown for Gun Control, the tally for school shootings in the U.S. since 2013 has almost reach a devastating 300. Everytown defines a school shooting as an incident in which a “firearm discharges a live round inside a school building or on a school campus or grounds.”
Understandably so, shooting incidents like the one at Marshall County High School on Jan. 23 and Stoneman Douglas High School that just took place on Feb. 15 have left many children shaken and scared to go to school – an environment in which every child should always feel safe to learn and grow. A sentiment strongly felt by eight-year-old Ava Olsen, who was on the playground during the Townville Elementary shooting on April 29, 2017.
According to ABC News, Ava wrote to President Donald Trump asking, “Are you going to keep kids safe? How can you keep up safe?” Ava wrote this letter to the President when she was just seven years old, after she witnessed her best friend – six-year-old Jacob Hall – get shot on school grounds.
According to an account in The Washington Post, Ava went on to say, “I loved him and was going to marry him one day. I hate guns. One ruined my life and took my best friend.”
President Donald Trump then replied:
“Schools are places where children learn and grow with their friends. Their halls should be free of fear,” according to a photo of his letter in the Post. “It is my goal as President to make sure that children in America grow up in safe environments, giving them the best opportunity to realize their full potential.”
With these recent events, the focus has once again shifted to gun safety. Some are asking why gun reforms are not getting through, while others are saying focusing on ‘mental health’ over gun control is not enough. Still others are pointing to the issue of background checks.
